Another busy week in the life of Loughgall Golf Club, the weather is still very much as weather is in Northern Ireland…. a tad unpredictable. However with the beginning of summer we are hoping for a bit more of the good stuff, warmth and sunshine… hopefully? The Murder Mystery NI sponsored Weekly Challenge is a very popular event. Having the opportunity to play your competition round anytime from Sunday up to and including Friday gives most people a chance of competing, this seems to be the appeal of the event. This week’s winner won emphatically with a five point gap, young Barry Rayner produced an excellent round of 41 points. The next best score was Stephen Magill with 36 points followed by big brother Ian Magill with 33 points, well done fellas! Oh and well done to Barry who also got the only 2 of the competition! The Nutmeg Treasures sponsored Wednesday Sweep is now a qualifying competition. This week’s winner is Dennis Lavery, very well done Dennis! This event is only nine holes which generally appeals to those of us who are short on time but can get out for a couple of hours. Often in the evening with the benefit of the longer days and later opening times. This 9 hole weekly sweep offers the opportunity to get a qualifying competition played for those golfers hoping to compete on Captains Day. Six scorecards in qualifying events must be played if you want the chance of competing for 1st prize on the big day. By playing the sweep you have the chance to get your handicap up to date, which could mean a cut to your h.cap but it also means you get the chance of getting shots back if you don’t win or get a runners up position! If anyone is looking to play in inter-club team competitions you will need to have played in four qualifying events to be eligible. The Saturday competition was the Saltmarine Stroke event, it usually takes steady scoring with very few errors to do well in this type of competition and I am pleased to say Noel Cooke is the worthy winner! Noel had a nett score of 65, three shots better than Patrick McCrory in 2nd place. Our club Captain Eddie Millar took third spot with a nett 69! Marty Dalzell had the best gross score of 76, well done Marty! Section winners were John Allen 0-12, Willie Crozier 13-18, David Murray 19+, front nine Ian Magill and the back nine was won by Robert Mawhinney. Well done all those in the prizes! The Junior 18 Hole Competition, this was won by Ben Currie with John Harrison as the runner-up. Well done to both Ben and John! The May player of the month was….Daniel Brown, 2nd was Ben Currie and in 3rd place was Fintan Walsh! Great effort lads, well done! Just an update on the return leg of the Rossmore match against Cloverhill at Loughgall on Sunday. We were beaten away from home 3 and a half to our half so we had to produce the goods. However it went to the very last pairing out on the course and to the last 2 holes, but despite a hole-in-one on the 11th we iust fell short and Cloverhill go through to the next round. A big hand to Team Captain Evan Simpson and all those players who made themselves available for the team representing Loughgall Golf Club, there is always next season fellas! On Monday June 22nd we are going to have a Divot Repair session…. 6.30 sharp! We done this last season, it’s just to give a little help and show appreciation to our ground staff who do such a great job on our course. Everyone is welcome and your help would be greatly appreciated. Good luck and enjoy your golf!
