Loughgall Golf Clubs Saturday competition had another excellent turnout, especially so because the format was strokeplay which sometimes puts the higher handicapper off. The reason behind that thought is the higher handicap golfer often lacks the consistancy of middle and lower handicappers and consistancy is required when playing a stroke competition, but that is not quite the case as anyone on their day can win. Proving the point, our winner this week is a 17 handicap golfer and I believe a 1st time winner at Loughgall, I am sure Liam will correct me if I am mistaken. A gross 83 gave Liam McArdle a nett 66 and 1st place in the McCann Apples strokeplay event! Second spot went to Adam Kerr with a nett 67, in third place also on a nett 67 was Kris Hunniford. The best gross score was won by Jonathan Hewitt, a very good 74 achieved with tremendous consistancy, his measured approach will nearly always keep Jonathan in the race for best gross.
Section winners were Kyle Holmes 0-12, Adrian Faulkner 13-18, Kenny Mitchell 19+, front 9 goes to Davy McCrory, back 9 was won by Albert Mulligan. The senior prize was taken by Malachy Cullen and the best junior went to Luke Mulligan! Very well done fellas. There were six 2s recorded and they were by Jack Traynor, John Allen, John Currie, Denis Glass, Luke Mulligan and and Kyle Holmes, congratulations to all the prize winners.
The weekly challenge was won by Anthony Ball and the best senior score was taken by Brian McGuigan and just one 2 recorded! Well done Anthony and Brian!
A little rain has crept back in during the week, but we dont mind a little as its good for the course. Ideally we want the rain to arrive at night so we can enjoy the warm sunny weather for the daytime…. golfers can only dream of this, at least until an app is produced to do the job…lol.
As part of the Apple Blossom weekend a Mixed Greensomes Open Event was held on Friday 2nd May. This is not the first year this event has been held and will definitely not be the last as there was an excellent turnout for the occasion. The winning score was 43 points, however there were two pairings who came in with that points score. Adrian Faulkner & Nicola Spence narrowly beat Evan Simpson & G.Steed on a countback to decide the winner, very unlucky to have the joint winning points score and come in 2nd but there can only be one winner(actually two in this case….) and that is Adrian & Nicola! Well done to the winners and better luck next time for the also rans who made the competition such a success, its the quality of the chasing pack that adds to the worth of the event and the winning team!
There has been a great buzz around Loughgall over the Apple Blossom weekend and although the weather could have been kinder to us there were great numbers at the Country Park and plenty to occupy just about everyone. The Open Stableford Event held on Monday 5th May also saw a good turnout, despite the damp conditions some excellent scores were produced, but there can be no doubt about the winner! Harvey Park is proving to be a very handy golfer, on his day he can produce a very decent score. Monday was Harvey’s day… 42 points left him 5 shots clear of 2nd place Robert Mawhinney on 37 points, 3rd place was the bandit commonly known as Simon Wallace with 36 points. The best gross went to Brian McGuigan going around in 84. Section winners were Sam Jenkins 0-12, Aaron Agg 13-18, Alan Mills 19+, front 9 E.Mawhinney, back 9 Graham Buckley. Best senior score was that of John Currie and Lorraine Abbot had the best ladies score! Well done to Harvey and all the prize winners, better luck next time for those who didnt do as well as they hoped.
This coming Saturday 10th May we have another Stableford Open Event, so another opportunity for Loughgall Golf Club to share our course with those golfers who are not members, well not yet anyway…? Most golfers coming to Loughgall for the first time generally leave with a good opinion of our course and hopefully our members too, so we are hoping for another successful open competition, the more the merrier!
Keep practicing and keep entering the competitions, its you who are making the competitions as competitive as they are, ultimately we all have to produce our best….. but thats what its all about! Good luck and enjoy your golf!
