Loughgall Golf Club has another busy week with lots going on both at the course and around the country, but first an update from the Apple Blossom weekend.  The Saturday and Monday competition was a two day event in addition to being seperate individual competitions, so we have the definitive result of the 2 day event!  In first place the winner of the Apple Blossom Open our very first 2 day event was Stephen Magill with a combined total of 80 points, in 2nd position was Fiona Martin also on 80 points but cruelly being beat on a countback, excellent golf from both Stephen and Fiona very well done great consistancy!  In 3rd place was Patrick McCrory with a very good score of 77 points and 4th place was Ian Magill who seems to have found a resurgence of form with 2 rounds giving Ian 76 points….well done fellas!

The country park was once again host to a vintage rally, actually there were cars of every description, many side shows and various fast food options for the hundreds of visitors.  The weather was playing it’s part too, sunshine and warmth for most of the day which always increases the likelyhood of a good turnout!  However it’s the golf which we are interested in, a team scramble was the format of the golfing day’s competition, the best score of the day belonged to Jonathan Faulkner, Gerard Mulholland and David & Kenny Mitchell with a score of 47 points.  Runner’s up were Dessie Hughes, Davy McCrory, David McCool and Jack Traynor with their round of 46 points…. well done both teams and also those in the chasing pack!

The Murder Mystery NI sponsored Weekly Challenge was won by that up and coming youngster Simon Wallace with 40 points, Anthoney Ball had the same score but beaten on the countback….unlucky mate.  Third place was young Simon Wallace’s personal chauffeur and golfing companion Ian Magill with 38 points, well done Ian…. onward and upward fella’s.

Winner of the Nutmeg Treasures sponsored Wednesday Sweep was Stephen Magill, well done Stephen your playing well at the moment, I hope you are playing in one of our inter-club teams?

Inter-club competitions… Our Ulster 4 ball team played at home against Mannan Castle at the weekend and team captain John Currie seemed reasonably pleased with a win by 3 and a half & 14 holes to 1 and a half to be taken to Mannan Castle next week for the 2nd leg, however it’s no done deal….it’s all to be played for, good luck fella’s!

The Holt Shield team played at Castlreagh Hills and were beaten 1 and a half to 3 and a half, most of the matches were very close Sam Jenkins managed a half but Jamie Mulholland won his match 7 and 6…. that’s 3 wins out of 3 for Jamie!

The Pierce Purcell was played at Portadown on Sunday and for those of you that don’t know it’s an alternate shot pairing, which some golfers find not so easy to get used to compared to regular singles format.  Sixteen teams from Clubs around and about meet at at the venue, five pairings from each club play alongside five pairings from another club, the four lowest scores from each club count.  The 4 lowest accumulated team scores go through into the next round.  Although the weather could have been far worse it was not the easiest of conditions for playing golf, quite gusty! We managed some reasonable scores between our pairings but at the end of the day when all the scores were in we missed out of a playoff by one point and two points better would have seen us through.  We can all look back upon the odd duffed shot or two and that was the difference between through to the next round or in this case… not!  Special mention of Noel Holmes and Dessie Hughes who went around in 79 shots! Well done to Aaron Agg who was excellent in his role as team captain.  Unlucky fella’s!

The Ulster Cup played at home against Ardminnian, team captain Clive Currie won his match 2 and 1, Jackson Ruddock & Robert Treanor won their match 6 and 5…!  At that point the game was declared over and Loughgall go through to the next round.  Obviously the team captain set the right example for Jackson and Robert to rise to, but the truth is the hard work was done away at Ardminnian on the 1st leg and once at Loughgall there was no mercy shown…very impressive!

Please play your singles and doubles matches asap!

Good luck and enjoy your golf!
