Every club has a captains day and Loughgall Golf Club is no exception, indeed its very much looked forward to, unfortunately for our Captain and everyone that played in the competition the heavens opened and did not close until all competitors were waterlogged. After a run of such good weather it really put the dampeners on Kevin McCoys Captains Day, however our captain takes everything in his stride and was at the 1st tee with good will and encouragement, also at the refreshments tent he was there once again unfazed by the adverse conditions ….qualities we could all do with ourselves. The weather is not in anyones control, as the insurance companies would say ‘its an act of god’ which normally means thats tough! Fortunately the evenings procedings were much more within our control and went along quite nicely, the food at The Famous Grouse was presented beautifully and we were spoilt for choice, quality and quantity… no one went hungry! Master of ceremonies was our Club Secretary Derick Hynes with speeches from the Lady Mayoress, Club President Kevin Keegan and ofcourse our Club Captain Kevin McCoy, the speeches went very well and were not overly long, which can be rare on these occasions but each of the speakers got their point across, bringing a bit of humour into the formal procedings which was roundly applauded.
Now to the business end of the golf and in doing so I will get to the point, we had two scores of 38 points by Brian Teague and Eugene Scullion who were 4th and 3rd respectively. Stephen McKenna took 2nd place with a score of 40 points, great golf in the conditions in which they were played. Adam Kerr took the gross prize with a round of 78, well done Adam! The winner of Captains Day and grinning from ear to ear was none other than Jason Wilson, his 41 points was a superb score on the day! A very popular win and a man whose modesty in acceptance was very warming if not slightly contrasting with his on course demeanour where his golfing companions have been suffering at the hands of a golfer in resurgence… but its good too see Jason hit form at the right time, well done mate! Congratulations all those in the prizes, but you will have another chance of the big prize again next year just like the rest of us who fell by the wayside. A wee mention about our Vice-Captain Eddie Millar, a prominant figure around LGC the sort of fella you cant help but like and always there to help if you need him, if he is not on holiday somewhere …lol? Eddie was given a special prize of Club Man 2014, he gives a lot of time and effort to this club, he is efficient and does it all with a smile and possibly a joke or three, congratulations Eddie its well deserved.
We will not say too much about the evening event after the golf of the day, the speeches and the excellent meal, but there were a few shapes being cut on the dance floor? Not one to mention names but Stephen Mullen looked like he was in training for strictly… or maybe dancing on ice, while Nelson Weir was both grooving on the dance floor and in the seated area….at one point grooving while horizontal? Towards the very end of the evening was the unauthordox but very entertaining duo of Davy and Mandy McRoberts who where celebrating their wedding anniversary in a style of their own, but it all made for a great evening and the day that started with rain ended on a happy note…but still raining.
Congratulations to our Club Captain Kevin McCoy who had the worst of conditions for a captains day we have seen this century but still made a success out of the day.
Good luck and enjoy your golf!
