A big turnout for the ever popular St Andrews Qualifier, always high on every golfers list of competitions to win at Loughgall and Stephen Wilson was the man of the moment. Stephen scored a nett 67, but he was hard pushed by Kenny Kerr who took the gross prize shooting a round of 77. However Kenny also got a hole in one, well done mate that will increase your funds! Section winners were Michael Connor 0-12, Stephen Thompson 13-18 and in the 19 plus group Cormac Toner took the prize. There are no 2s in this particular competition but there will be a payout for the hole in one. A very well done to all the prize winners, fingers crossed some of us also-rans will do better next time.
Loughgall played away at Silverwood on Sunday past in the Rossmore Cup, the weather was like Spain on a good day the welcome was very friendly and the game was played in good spirit! We lost two games and we won two games, so we came away with a very satisfactory result, just six holes down to a decent Silverwood team. A good effort by all the team but a special mention of Graham Buckley and partner Jeff Armstrong who won well finishing 4 and 2, It would be remiss of me not to mention the partnership of Davy McRoberts and Baz Ray(fb) who won the last 4 holes to go from 2 down to 2 up with Davy`s excellent putt on the 18th topping off a tremendous come back. Captain Derick Hynes was ever present on the day with the necessary encouragement to keep the team positive…. Great Job! I hope Willie Turner managed to get into his car after accidently locking keys in the boot, it can happen to anyone.
The weather has been absolutely fantastic, but the heat following the dampness has meant the grass has grown quite rapid. The rough is meant to punish you for straying off the straight and narrow, but just finding the ball is difficult. Now to be balanced on this topic both the course and the ground staff are brilliant, they take great pride in their work and it really shows. I could write a couple of paragraphs about the improvements that have been made and I have in previous reports, however the rough is hard to ignore! Other golfers are saying it lets the course down, its too deep and thick….. thats the grumbling over!
Saturdays competition will be sponsored by Keegans Bar. Presidents Day has been moved to 3rd August!
