We have sampled some good weather over the past week or so, maybe there is more to come although they do predict a slight chill running up to this weekend….the big weekend!  It’s the Apple Blossom Open weekend which is just about the biggest weekend in our calendar.  We have a Mixed Doubles competition on Friday, day one of a two day Stableford event on Saturday, day two is on the Monday (both Saturday and Monday’s golf are individual competitions as well as the 2 day event).  In addition to the previously mentioned competitions we have the honour of hosting the Jimmy Bruen event on Sunday where 12 teams come to do battle in an area qualifying heat, it’s a big deal for our small club and a great opportunity to showcase our wee gem of a course.  It has been described as a wee gem in the past, let’s hope the visiting teams also enjoy our course…good luck to all!

Saturday was the C&G Embroidery sponsored strokeplay competition and the course was firming up well with the help of some dry weather.  It was young Alan Mills who made the most of the conditions, his round of 87 nett 69 was the winning score, however 2nd place Ryan Beattie also turned in a nett 69 but beat on the countback. Third place was Evan ‘Almighty’ with a nett 70, actually it’s Simpson but he may be known as…. ‘Almighty’ from now on…? An excellent win Alan well done!  Other positions…. the best gross… Jonny McNabb a round of 79, best senior score was that of club Captain Stephen Wilson.  Section winners… Jackson Ruddock 0-12, Clive Currie 13-18, Eddie Millar 19+, front 9 John Allen and the back nine was taken by Alan Magill.  There were ten 2s recorded this week. Well done fellas!

The Weekly Challenge sponsored by Murder Mystery NI was won by Stephen Magill with 45 points…. great score Stephen, Eddie Millar knows his way around the course…42 points gets Eddie 2nd place and Raymond (Bap) Henry took 3rd place with 40 points.  Just five 2s this week.  Well done fellas!

Junior 18 hole competition, there were several very good scores this week, even outside the top three the scores were decent.  1st place John Harrison 41 points, 2nd Fintan Walsh 40 points and 3rd was Nathan Ewart 39 points, Fintan had the only two.  Well done lads!

The course is looking better every week and the greens have picked up some pace, great work by the greenkeepers, the stakes around the course certainly does the job of defining the course….it’s all coming together, never any doubt!

Wishing everyone good luck for the big weekend ahead, anyone wishing to help out in any way can get in touch with a member of the golf club committee, I’m sure there will be plenty to do…. enjoy your golf!

STOP PRESS!….. We have 4 players through to play at St Andrews in the Public Courses Competition… Eugene Scullion was the overall winner, Jonny Hewitt had the best gross score, both Evan ‘Almighty’ Simpson and Paul Lavery won their sections!  Well done fellas, I know you will have a great time at the home of golf, enjoy the experience it’s an opportunity not to be missed.  Good luck, go and win for yourselves and spread the good name of LGC, you have earned your place at St Andrews.
