The talk of a heatwave was a little exaggerated, although there was some lovely weather which was quite hot for a while, it fluctuated with something less than the balmy conditions we hoped for.  It seems that Northern Ireland is not only great for growing apples and the like, it has a wonderful ability to attract clouds from far and near.  The gathering cumulus prevents the danger of sunstroke, severe sunburn, or even a sun tan and if that is not enough we can rely upon cooling waters from above to bring down our raging temperatures and relief from dehydration.  Yes we are totally prepared for a NI summer…. keep a wet suit, shorts and tee shirt(with collar) in your golf bag at all times.

Saturday saw the vintage rally roll into Loughgall Country Park, it certainly brings with it an atmosphere, a buzz…. you can hear it clear across the course and it costs them nothing but the effort of erecting their stalls and manning the car park where we usually park.  We also had a Club Stableford competition taking place!  Results as follows…1st with 37 points was David Mitchell, a good score now the course is set up long and greens quick.  Alan Mills and Wayne Crawford both had 36 points a piece and took 2nd and 3rd place respectively.  Robert Treanor had the best gross with 84 strokes, Eugene Scullion had 34 points to take the best senior score, front nine goes to vice captain Aidie Faulkner and the back nine was won by Ryan Kennedy….well done fellas!  Only three 2s recorded.

The Weekly Challenge sponsored by Murder Mystery NI was won by Dessie Hughes with 35 points, Brian McGuigan 34 points took 2nd and Jim McCrory was 3rd with 33 points, only two 2s recorded.

The nine hole Wednesday Sweep started with a win for John Currie, just 17 points got the job done, Dessie Hughes was 2nd with 13 points and Davy McRoberts 3rd with 11 points…. not too many entered this week, it seems to have caught a lot of people out, it should be more competitive next week.

The Junior 18 hole competition was won by John Harrison with a score of 43 points, Ryan Tennyson 37 points and Fin Walsh 29 points…. good scoring fellas!

It was an unfortunate Pierce Purcell team event for ourselves at Mannan Castle on Sunday past, there was no qualification for LGC.  The tragic news of Willie Turner passing away on Saturday was one of several reasons for a less than good enough display on the day with some exceptions.  Willie was a great character and will be missed.  That’s two good men gone to meet their maker in a relatively short space of time, Willie Young was the other….both very active within Loughgall Golf Club and both gone too early….R.I.P.

Life has to move on, our departed friends would be out playing golf if they could, so good luck and enjoy your game.
