The Fairways of Loughgall are just buzzing

Another really busy weekend for Loughgall Golf Club with Holt Shield, Ulster Cup and Rossmore matches taking place, plus the stroke competition on Saturday and the start of the Sunday Sweep, if you like golf you have plenty to keep yourself occupied at Loughgall!

Saturday 29th April, the S&J GRAPHIX strokeplay event took place and the weather was reasonably kind to us, a bit on the cool side earlier on but it warmed up a little as the day went on. As for the golf 1st prize goes to Davy McAdam shooting a 79 nett 68, Davy is a very steady golfer and enjoys competition golf, another win like that and his handicap will be into single figures, well done mate! 2nd was Norman Stewart with a 91 nett 69, 3rd was Richard Abbott scoring an 87 nett 70 and 4th was Stephen Wilson with an 80 nett 70.

The best Gross was won by Jonathan Hewitt with a round of 75, excellent scoring well done! Section winners are 0-12 Ian Gordon, 13-18 Eddie Millar and 19-28 Dessie Nixon.
There were six 2`s recorded and they were by Davy McRoberts, Eddie Millar, Dessie Nixon, Roy McCrea, Barry Wallace and last but not least Adam Galbraith.
Well done to those who were in the prizes and better luck next time to all that took part in the competition but didn`t get a mention.

On Saturday afternoon our Holt Shield team played host to Masserene, as usual in these inter-club competitions the standard was very high and always competitive. The end result was a 3-2 win to Loughgall, so well done Andy Currie and Derick Hynes but special thanks go to Jonny McKnight, Stephen Mullen and Adam Kerr whose form on the day proved too good for the opposition.

Loughgall`s Rossmore team were in action on Sunday when Clover Hill came to do battle on our fairways. Our team players on the day were Jonny Lockhart & Brian Nixon, Willie Young & Colin Jeffers, Leslie Lyttle & Glen Vennard and Graham Buckley & Stephen Crowe, the end result was 2 points each but we are 2 holes up for the return match at Clover Hill. Once again it was a very tight competition, well done to captain John Currie and his team, but a special mention to the pairing of a Lockhart & Nixon who won their match particularly well.

While the inimitable John Currie was rallying his Rosmore team at Loughgall, younger cousin Clive Currie (Loughgall`s managerial equivalent to Harry Redknap) was doing much the same with his Ulster Cup team at Moyola Park, however Clive is a player captain so had to lead by example. Thats exactly what happened in a very tight match which actually was a draw on the day 3.5-3.5, the other team members were Derick Hynes, Walter Beattie, Sam Jenkins, Robert Treanor, Leslie Lyttle and Noel Holmes, overall the end result of the 2 legs was a 7.5-6.5 win to Loughgall. I am told their were some notable performances on both legs of the draw and a very important half point gained by Noel Holmes on the long 18th Par 5. Three excellent shots took Noel to the green within 10ft of the pin, there was a large gathering around the 18th green due to an earlier competition and the atmosphere must have been electric, something like the winner of a tour competition walking up the last. Noel is a modest man and im sure the occasion will stay with him for a long time, considering he was down to his opponent all through the match until he won that hole….what a finish!

The Sunday Sweep result will be a week behind to allow for any score cards being posted late on Sunday.

So its been a great weekend for Loughgall Golf Club, this Saturday is the Apple Blossom Open so until next week …Enjoy your Golf!
