Great Golf and Sunshine for BJ Mullen & Sons Sponsored Strokeplay Event

We have inter-teams matches both home and away aswell as our Saturday competition and the not forgetting the Sunday sweep, so there is plenty to talk about this week at Loughgall.

First of all the BJ Mullen&Sons strokeplay event on saturday was well supported especially considering the number of team players that were committed to their various teams in the afternoon. The best score of the day was from Adrian Simpson with a nett 69 playing off 19 h.cap, second was Aaron Agg who is well and truely recovered from a recent thumb injury which kept him out of action for a while…. a nett 70 playing off 13. John Currie was third with his cack handed hockey grip producing a nett 72 playing off 10 and Davy McRoberts takes fourth place with a nett 73 playing off 17.

The best Gross on the day was the 71 shots taken by Jonathan Hewitt. The best Juvenile score goes to John Alfante jnr.

Section winners; 0-12 Wayne Crawford, 13-18 Matthew Bown, 19-28 Anthony McElmeel, front 9 goes to Adam Galbraith and the back 9 to Rodney Clarke.

There were only three 2s recorded and they go to Mervyn Todd, John Allen and Willie Young, with such good conditions I think most people would have expected more than just three players getting a two. Well done to all the names above and better luck next time to the rest of us!

Inter-club competitions

The Ulster Fourball Team captained by Cecil Brownlee had a tough time at Blacklion last week and had much to do to stay in the competition. An improved performance at home saw the teams draw on the day but unfortunately for us Blacklions splendid home performance took them through to the next round with an overall 7-3 victory. Well done Blacklion good luck in your next round. Hard luck Loughgall better luck next year.

The Junior Cowdy Team with Graham Buckley as their captain played Lisburn, everyone performed well and it was a good tight match, Raymond Henry & Rab Mawhinney won so did James O`Hagan & Willie McWilliams. Alan Ball & Steve Wall were narrowly beaten and Eddie Millar & Kyle Montgomery got a half. We were beaten 4.5-3.5 overall and I know Graham was proud of the efforts made by all the Junior Cowdy team and greatly appreciated it. There has to be a winner but its important we compete to the best we can on the day, after that you can do no more only wish Lisburn well in the next round, so good luck Lisburn!

The Holt Shield Team was in action on Sunday playing Cliftonville at Loughgall, once again it proved to be a tight match but the we were beat 3-2 in the end, but good wins from Stephen Mullen and Andy Currie. Unlucky overall on the day fellas.

The Ulster Cup Team captained by Clive Currie played on Saturday afternoon at Loughgall in the heat of the sun, Clive was hopefull that Blackwoods slim advantage would not be enough to hold a rampant Loughgall team in fine form at home. The story goes like this… the first five players, Derick Hynes, Leslie Lyttle, Sam Jenkins, Stephen Crowe, Clive Currie all won, Walter Beattie and Noel Holmes were called in early…. job done! It has to be said it was a very impressive display by the team and they deserve all the praise thrust on them. There is the potential for something special here, but a dose of realism…. we have the pleasure of playing Portstweart next and they thumped Silverwood, so enjoy the victory but there are tough matches ahead, take one match at a time and play for your club. Well done fellas! It should be said that Blackwood were most gracious in defeat and were good company at the Famous Grouse afterwards.

Ulster cup Loughgall v Blackwood – Walter Beattie holes out on 16th for birdie 3
