The weather has been great, however this week we are going through a short spell of showers, cloud cover and a bit of sunshine, but it’s not cold!  As much as I love the sunshine and heat it’s a fact that the course needs the rain to keep it in good condition and prevent the grass getting scorched.  The weather should improve by the weekend and hopefully the more pleasant weather will stay with us a bit longer.

The competition on Saturday was the Fred Daly stroke play qualifying event and the winner has been in great form over the past few weeks, Jack Traynor took just 77 strokes to get around the course, with a h.cap of 10 it’s a nett 67.  An excellent score Jack, the way you are playing your handicap will continue getting lower, great potential Jack… keep a cool head and the world is your lobster!  A great score by Paul McKernan gave him 2nd place, his round of 87 off an 18 h.cap works out to a nett 69, Willie Crozier was 3rd with a round of 84… that’s a nett 70!  Sam Jenkins 77 was the best gross score of the day and Kevin McCoy’s score of 87 was the best by a senior.  Section winners were club captain Stephen Wilson 0-12, Stephen Thompson 13-18, Ryan Beattie 19+, front nine goes to Barry Rayner and the back nine to Ian Megaw.  There were 11 two’s.  Well done fellas, better luck next time if you weren’t in the prizes.

The Weekly Challenge sponsored by Murder Mystery NI was won by Stuart Treanor with a very good 39 points, also on 39 points but came 2nd after a countback was Paul McKernan…that’s two 2nd places this week for Paul, all that practicing is starting to pay off , well done!  Another familiar name takes 3rd place… Jack Treanor with 38 points!

The junior competition was well in progress when a roll of thunder was heard, over the next 15 minutes the thunder grew stronger to the point where a genuine fear of lightning was a serious possibility.  Unfortunately the decision had to be taken to cancel the competition.  Junior convenor Clive Currie  gave the call to the juniors further around the course (of all the days to leave his claxon at home), so there are no competition results for the juniors this week.

The LGC Junior Cowdy team played away to Ardglass at the weekend and came away with a pretty decent result, team captain Andy Currie was happy with the 2.5 and 7 holes up against the 1.5 points of Ardglass.  We look forward to the return match at Loughgall and hope we are equally successful  then.  Well done fellas!

We also had the LGC Rosmore team in action at Mayobridge, however a 4-0 and 10 holes defeat on the day leaves our team with a lot to do on the return match at Loughgall on the 26th of June.  I have played Mayobridge myself and it’s not the run of the mill golf course, it’s quirky so it’s not surprising they done well at home.  I know the players in our Rosmore team and they have a lot about them, I expect the competitiveness and experience of our lads on home soil to come through on the 2nd leg.  Good luck fellas….you can do it!

Good luck and enjoy your golf!
