Well we are getting closer to the start of the season, this Saturday 26th March we have the Captains Drive with the now traditional shotgun start.  It’s important to be at the course with plenty of time to spare, remember you will have to walk to your allotted tee box which could take you 10 or 15 minutes from the starter hut!  The start time is 8.30 so aim to be at the starter hut for 8am, by the time everything is sorted out you should have enough time to get to your tee box without causing yourself serious damage.  Out of breath and turning purple is not a good look, it will not help your game and we don’t really want to be ringing through to reception for the defibrillator…. not to mention the cost of the phone call?  I would like to wish everyone well for the upcoming season especially our new captain Stephen Wilson, enjoy your time in the hot seat I’m sure you will take it all in your stride just as normal.  I have noticed one or two players at the course more than usual in preparation for the season, good to see things hotting up, the game faces are now on.  Going by time spent at the course I would have to say Wayne Crawford and Davy McRoberts will be disappointed if they are not in the winning team this Saturday.

Results for Saturday 19th March, Men’s Club Stableford non qualifying competition, 1st Patrick McCrory 43 points playing off a 13 h.cap, in 2nd place Alan Magill 41 points off his 12 h.cap, Evan Simpson and Harry Clougher both playing off a 12 h.cap had 40 points each but Harry was beat on the countback so Evan gets 3rd and Harry takes 4th spot!  There were only 3 two’s recorded.

The Weekly Challenge sponsored by Murder Mystery NI. – week ending 18th March,   1st Mal Cullen with 41 points, 2nd James Curran with 39 points and in 3rd place is our new Club President Cecil Brownlee with 38 points on his scorecard, well done fellas!

The Junior St Patricks 18 hole competition…. 1st John Harrison, 2nd Ryan Tennyson and 3rd Daniel Brown, very well done fellas you are never too far away from the top 3 positions!  The 9 hole competition held on Saturday 19th March….1st Ben Currie, 2nd Shea Williamson and 3rd Ryan Tennyson…. great result lads!

Stephen Mullen took his Ulster Cup Team to the City of Derry Golf Club on Sunday past, a very early fixture, especially considering our season here does not start until next week.  However whether it was the early start in the season or an unfamiliar course, but we didn’t do too well, infact we got pretty well stuffed.  It’s not completely over because Derry have to come to our course and we obviously will have the advantage on the day, but after losing 6-1 and 21 holes it will need our best men playing their best.  It definitely can be done because we have some great players in this team, so I for one would not write them off.  Very well done Wayne Crawford who was the one man who carried the rest of our team up at Derry, now the rest have to step up to Wayne’s level if we are to win.  I believe Sunday April 17th is the date set for the return match at LGC.

Just for those of you who don’t already know, Jason Wilson’s Jimmy Bruen team snatched victory on the 2nd extra hole in the final of the Team Challenge.  Although most people had them down as the likely winners from the start, Clive Currie’s Ulster Cup Select Team nearly pulled the rug from under their feet… now that would have caused a few red faces!  Well done to all the teams who entered the Team Challenge, without the rest of you the competition wouldn’t be the competition it is.  An excellent final well done both teams!

So good luck and enjoy your golf!
