Press release about the Community Cup 2008

18/09/2008

In the bright early September sunshine, Loughgall Golf Club in conjunction with the Ballyhegan and Kilmore District Rural Community Association has 90-100 competitors in their Annual Community Cup Competition.

Ably marshalled and started by the excellent Brian Nixon, the competitors all started with high ambitions, some to be out done by “the rough” others by “the bunkers” or “the water” and others “that damned out of bounds.”

Negotiating to nearest the Pin for the men at 5th hole was Raymond Mc Cauge/Portadown Golf Club, and a combination of power and accuracy was ably demonstrated at 6th hole by Gareth Thompson / Portadown Golf Club to  win the longest drive. Nearest the pin for Ladies was Maeve Mc Veigh/Dungannon Ladies Golf Club and Ladies Longest Drive was won by Deidre Mc Gowan /Dungannon Ladies Golf Club.

The overall team prize was won by the 4 ball of Loughgall members Cecil Brownlee/vice captain, ex captain James Hewitt, Ben Mc Allister and J Wortley with a total of 99 points followed by Loughall  neighbours  N Walker, D Mc Crory A Mc Cartney and D Huey with a total of 96 points and three teams in joint third place on 94 points.

The organising committee of Cecil Brownlee (tee coordinator), James Crawford, James Hewitt and Kevin Keegan/ Loughgall Golf Club Members and Paul Morgan, Arthur McKeever and Joe McKeever / Ballyhegan and Kilmore District Rural Community Association members would like to thank the local food/drink companies that sponsored the excellent fayre at the Hospitality tent; Patrick McCann Orchard County Foods, C Mallon and Sons Butchers, Hewitt Meats, Johnstone Bakery Armagh, Thomas & William Gilpin / Gilfresh, Graham Hewitt/ The Northern Ireland Fruit Growers Association, Kevin Keegan/ Damper Murphy’s Pub and C McKeever and Sons/ Railway Arms Portadown, Oliver Fruit & Flower Armagh, Brownlees Enniskillen Water.

The event raised approximately £1500/£750 each for the local charities Orchard Play Group Ballyhegan and Loughgall Play Group which will be presented and press released shortly.

The organizing committee would like to thank the local business’s that sponsored the competition, the list was displayed on the first tee of the competition and the 19th and can  be viewed in Loughgall Golf Club presently, and all the competitors without whom this competition would not have become the resounding success that it is!

Remember, keep the first Saturday in September 2009 free for this event next year.

A special word of thanks to Arthur Mc Keever, the “chef extraordinaire” who worked so tirelessly at the BBQ and contributed enormously to the events  success, ably assisted by assistants Charles Mc Sherry,& Niall Gallagher, and youth volunteers Katie Fearon and Helen McKeever.

We look forward to seeing you on the 1st tee September 5th 2009 next year again and hope it will be as enjoyable as the last 4 years when almost £1000 each was raised for the Newry Hospice Respite Centre, Cardiac Care Craigavon Area Hospital, The McMillan Nurses, Armagh Multiple Sclerosis Society and Zero-8-Teen and Orchard Play Group Ballyhegan and Loughgall Play Group.
