Saturday golf....a thaw point!
Well I am sure most of you know why the course was closed on Saturday, incase you dont it was the greens that were frozen and the rain was not seeping through, to play the course would have meant putting through puddles of water. It would have done harm to the greens and was the correct decision to make.
Week 2 of the Team Challenge did go ahead on Sunday and it turned out to be quite a pleasant day.... weather wise that is. As for the golf it really depends if you were on the winning side.
The Ulster Cup team captained by Clive Currie was playing Team2Beat and although it was a very closely contested match Team2Beat was beat 6.5-5.5. A missed putt or two was all the difference between winning and losing, well done Clive and his team and hard luck Team2Beat and their captain Barry.
The other match was between The Captains Team with Davy Coote as their captain and Holt Shield Lions whose captain Jason Wilson was sitting on the sidelines allowing his picks to do the business on the course. A result of 4.5-7.5 in favour of the Lions would suggest Jason obviously picked his team well, I believe Jason was very pleased with a number of his players performances. Well done Jason and his Lions and hard luck to Davy and his team, it seems they were playing against a team in great form.
Saturdays course closure affected the Team Challenge as there were matches arranged that could not get played, these matches will have to be played as soon as possible to avoid any backlog of fixtures running into the beginning of the season in March, so those captains involved will need to get together and organise the re-match.
Enjoy your golf!
28/01/2012 - 2012 Stableford Event
The weekend has seen both the Saturday Stableford Competition and the start of the Team Challenge, so there has been much activity and despite the poor weather some good scores posted.
So to the Stableford Competition held on Saturday 28th January, the winner and 4 points clear of the field with an excellent 48 points was Willie McWilliams, apparently Willie reckons he can get down to single figures this year if the tee markers are kept where they are now.
Second place goes to Jonny McKnight with 44 points and 3rd was Willie Crozier with 43 points.
Once again we see the name of Derick (festa) Hynes creeping into into the prizes with the best Gross score of 74 strokes and thats playing off his new handicap, we never doubted he could play off 7 .... I think there may be a little more trimming to be done yet?
There were only 4 two`s and they were by Wayne Crawford, Charlie Johnston, Jonny McKnight and Lee Stewart. Very well done to all the prize winners!
Our notice board is one of the main ways we keep you informed as to what is happening in the club and this time of the year there will be plenty of information, please check regularly to keep upto date.
The Captains Drive will be on the 10th march, you will find the a sheet on the notice board for those interested in playing that day, make sure you have your name on it.

The Team Challenge saw a big turnout on Sunday, six teams awaiting the opportunity to take on their opponents. After a slow start to proceedings the golf got underway and was fiercely contested. Even though the course had suffered at the hands of the weather which at times made the round hard work, there were some sterling performances.
The results of week 1; Edenderry 7.5 v Holt Tigers 4.5
Holt Select 6.5 v Team2Beat 5.5
The Freshmen 7.5 v Captains Team 4.5
Weather permitting, week 2 of the competition continues next week, after week 3 we will know three of the teams going through and the two teams who have to play-off for the 4th and final place to reach the next round of the competition. Enjoy your golf!
21/01/2012 - 2012 Stableford Event
The course was in pretty good condition over the weekend compared to a few weeks ago, although you still need to watch your footing in some places.
There was some good scores produced and best of the day was Willie McWilliams with 41 points, closely followed by Barry Rayner and Wayne Crawford also on 41 but beat on the countback.
The best front 9 went to Jonny McKnight and the best back 9 goes to Derick Hynes. Jason Wilson has started to hit some form and produced the best Gross score of the day, just 75 shots.
There were a number of 2s and they were achieved by; D.Hynes, J.McKnight, D.McRoberts, S.Mills, B.Rayner and B.Teague.
Well done to the above mentioned prize winners
There were several people disqualified because they had not completed their scorecard correctly.
Your card must have....
1) Name of competition.
2) Date.
3) Time.
4) Your Name.
(Any information written on the scrorecard must be clear and legible.)
If you put an incomplete scorecard into any competition at any other club the result will be the same. This info is needed to ensure everything is kept honest and above board, this is a requirement of the GUI and every other governing body in golf around the world.
We will see the start of the Team Challenge this weekend and I know it has been eagerly awaited. There is a lot to be played for and a huge amount of pride and ego on the line, so good luck to all, I hope your best is good enough!
Please remember to pay your competition entry fee before playing....£10 per player. Talk to your Team Captain for further information. Enjoy your golf!
14/01/2012 - 2012 Stableford Event
Glad to see more people entering the competition, the numbers were almost double the week before and hopefully there will be more next week as people become aware that there is nearly always a competition held on the Saturday regardless of the time of year.
Always take a look in the back office area and check the computer and notice board before going out to play your round. The day you don't enter could be the day you play really well, as my playing partner will find out from this report, no names but he is an ex-driving instructor and had 40 points!
The Winner of January Saturday 14th competition was Stephen Mills on 40 points, 2nd Robert Treanor with 39 points and 3rd Keith Campbell with 37 points, well done fellas!
Only 3 people got a 2, that was Davy Coote, Eddie Millar and Robert Treanor.
The team challenge will be starting soon, the draw should be taking place this weekend. This event is played on a Sunday, so if you are in a team make sure you have your £10 entry fee paid before the competition starts, contact your team captain for further information about your team.
Once again check the notice board regularly for upcoming events etc. Enjoy your golf!
07/01/2012 - 2012 Stableford Event
I hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Year, 2012 is going to be even better than last year, more golf, more competition and if possible more close run finishes.
First of all, incase anyone is unsure there will be a club stableford competition run every Saturday until the start of the season unless otherwise stated.
Please remember to do the usual log in to the computer before going out to play your round, put your entry fee in an envelope making sure your details on the front and pop it through the letter box on our office door. Equally important, your score card must be correctly filled in and posted in the box after your score has been entered into the computer.
The winner of this weeks competition was Willy McWilliams with 45 points and was 2nd Raymond Henry with 42 points. Walter Beattie, Eugene Scullion and Willy McWilliams each had a 2.
The amount of payouts is directly related to the numbers entering the competition, so the more the merrier!
Those of you that have been checking the notice board will be aware that entry sheets have already been put up for singles, doubles and the section knockout competitions. This to give anyone interested plenty of time to get their name on the sheets and get their money paid. I know there were a number of people who felt they missed out on these competitions last year, we want as many people to enter these events as possible and hope this year no one wanting to play will miss the opportunity. However if you dont have your money paid you will not go into the draw....dont miss out this time! Please check notice board for details.
