28/08/2010 - Glenview Trophies Sponsored Stableford Competition

Big scores seem to be a thing of the past at Loughgall golf club these days’ thanks to the combined efforts of our greens convener John for the course setup and our hard working handicap secretary Jason as yet again two players returned a winning score of 40 points during the Glenview Trophies sponsored stableford competition at the weekend, Jonny McNabb and Clive Currie. Jonny came out on top due his better back nine score. Playing off a handicap of six Jonny shot 19 pts on his opening nine holes and returned home with an excellent 21 pts for his back nine score. Clive, who is one of the most accurate players in the club for finding fairways and playing off a 10 handicap, scored 21 pts for the harder front nine holes and on the back nine had amassed 19 pts for a total of 40 pts standing on the 18th tee box, needing only a single point to win the competition Clive must have decided he would rather go fishing as he drove two tee shots strait into the angling lake on the right hand side to hand Jonny the win. Third place went to Stephen Graham who scored 37 pts off 13. Stephen scored 15 pts on his outward nine and 22 pts on his homeward nine. Fourth spot was won by David McCrory also with 37 pts.

The gross prize was won by David Chadwick and Michael Conner took the juvenile prize with 33 pts. The 0-12 section prize went to Roy Holmes with a score of 35 pts. Kevin McCoy took the 13-18 section with 36 pts and the 19-28 section was won by Willy Fenton also with 36 pts. The front nine prize was won by Drew Magee with a fine score of 19 pts and the back nine prize went to Raymond Henry with 21 pts.

Only five players scored a “2” at the weekend with Willy Fenton getting his at the 3rd hole. Dave Chadwick and Jonny McNabb recorded their “2”s at the 11th hole. Cecil Brownlee and Stephen Wilson got their “2”s at the 15th hole.

Next week’s competition is sponsored by Jewellery by Van Scoy and will be a stroke play event.

21/08/2010 - Trayner’s Ltd Sponsored Stroke Event

Last weekend’s competition sponsored by Trayner’s Ltd attracted another good field. Three players came in with the same nett score but the winner on the day was 16 handicapper Nigel McCorry with a good score of 68 nett. Nigel covered the front nine holes in 36 nett and returned home in 32 nett for his first win of the year. Second place went to Robert Treanor who also scored 68 nett off his 14 handicap. Robert went out in 36 nett and also came home in 32 nett only to lose out to Nigel over the last six holes. Third place went to William Turner. William scored an excellent 32.5 nett on the more difficult front nine and will be counting the cost of the couple of big numbers on the much easier back nine holes, to finish with his score of 68 nett. Neville Cornett took the fourth prize with a score of 69 nett. Neville scored 40.5 nett going out and a top score of 28.5 nett on his way home playing of his 25 handicap.

The gross prize was yet again claimed by currant player of the year Kenny Kerr with another great gross score of 75 playing of his six handicap. The juvenile winner on the day was Philip McCoy with a terrific score of 64 nett. Philip covered the course in 77 shots of his 13 handicap and for his efforts will be playing of 11 for the next competition (well done Philip).

The 0-12 section prize was won by Jason Wilson with a score of 71 nett. Brian Teague who has been playing great golf this month took the 13-18 section with a 69 nett score and the 19-28 section prize went to William Stewart with a score of 71 nett.

Nine “2”s were recorded at the weekend with Raymond Henry obviously in great striking form carding a pair of them at the 3rd and 13th holes. Nicholas Salley got his “2” at the 3rd hole. Nigel Magowan, Jackson Ruddock, Philip McCoy and Keith Johnson all got theirs at the 11th hole. Robert Treanor recorded his at the 13th hole and Mark Gilpin managed to eagle the 14th hole for his “2”.

The Icemen Show they are Not for Melting!

The day started with orange juice for breakfast, but it finished with champagne- with an ice bucket naturally-for loughgall pair Richard Wright and Joel Kennedy as they celebrated reaching the Mail All Ireland Trophy finals.

Wright and Kennedy are known as The Icemen at their club because the work together at Granville Foodcare, one of the largest cold storage facilities in Northern Ireland.

And they have certainly shown an ice-cold determination throughout the year to reach next month`s finals at Macreddin golf club co Wicklow culminating in their 3&2 quarter-final victory over Ballymoney club Gracehill's Ian Morrison and Jonny Munnis.

With the likes of Royal Portrush and Rory McElroy’s home club Hollywood going out of the competition in the earlier rounds, it was down to Gracehill and Loughgall to contest who was going through to represent Northern Ireland at Macreddin.

On a day of remarkable putting, Kennedy made the first birdie on the second hole to rapturous applause from a large group of supporters, followed by Wrights inspired putts at the fifth and sixth to see the Loughgall pair storm into a four-hole lead after just seven.

Gracehill fought back to cut the deficit, but Loughgall ran out comfortable winners with birdies from Wright at the 14th and Kennedy at the 16th.

Kennedy said: 'Our putters were certainly red hot. Everyone was celebrating at the club afterwards as this is the first victory in an Ulster final in the 10-year history of Loughgall. Now we`re really looking forward to the All-Ireland finals.'

14/08/2010 - M.G.M. Design Sponsored Stableford

The M.G.M. Design sponsored stableford held at Loughgall on Saturday attracted another good entry. The winner who has started to hit some great form lately with an excellent score of 42 pts was Brian Teague winning by two clear pts. The runner-up who hits the ball a country mile is Keith Campbell with a very respectable score of 40 pts. Third spot due his better back nine went to Stephen McCauley with 38 pts. Fourth place went Alan Magill with 38 pts who I hear had great delight knocking his brother Ian out of the club doubles during the week.

The 0-12 section was won by Roy Holmes with 37 pts. Robert Treanor also with 37 pts took the 13-18 section prize and Denis Glass with 36 pts won the 19-28 section. Kenny Kerr was the man on form winning the gross prize and young Adam Kerr was our best placed juvenile of the weekend with 36 pts. The front nine prize went to Stephen Graham with 20 pts, and Jonathan McKnight took the back nine with a fantastic 23 pts.

Twelve players managed to record “2”s at the weekend with Raymond Henry and john Currie both getting a pair at the 11th and 15th holes. Stuart Pearson was the only player to record a “2” at the 223 yards 5th hole. Ian Magill got his at the 11th and pat Keegan managed his at the 13th. Kevin McCoy, Peter Glass, Philip Leckey, David McCrory, Stephen Mills, Kenny Kerr, and Robbie McMinn all got their “2”s at the 15th hole.

07/08/2010 - Charity Golf Day

The charity golf day held at Loughgall golf club last Saturday was a resounding success. More than £4,000 was raised for prostate cancer awareness. A very big thank you to all those that supported the event by either entering a team, raising funds through an event or for giving sponsorship. Many thanks to all those members who gave their time to make sure the event ran smoothly, and to all the country park staff that helped to make the day such a success.

The format on the day was a fun two ball scramble. It was won by Stephen Wilson and John Allen with a brilliant 23 pts on each nine holes for a total score of 46 pts. In second place was father and son team Colm and Fionton Nixson also with 46 pts but with only 22 pts on their back nine holes had to settle for second place.

The best juvenile team score on the day came from Adam Kerr and Michael Conner with a whooping 47 pts. The prizes for longest drive and nearest the pin on the day went to Ross Kelly (well done Ross). Club professional Vivian Teague kindly gave up his time on the day and set up a beat the pro competition on the 15th par three which went down very well with everyone charging £2 for the privilege, again all proceeds going in the charity pot. The winner in the beat the pro competition was John Allen and the three runners up prizes of a free lesson with Vivian were Stephen Crowe, Kenny Kerr and John Currie. (I think Vivian has got his cut out with those three).

31/07/2010 - Captains Day 2010

Old lefty Walter Beattie joined an elite group of golfers who have won captains day at Loughgall on Saturday. Walter posted the top score of 40 pts, with 22 of them coming in the back nine holes in the closest finish ever seen at Loughgall in any competition never mind captain’s day-the most sought after prize in the golfing season. The course was in excellent condition for Brendan Morgan`s big day and praise must be given to the greens convener John Allen who working closely with green staff set the course up that well golfers were left scratching their their heads at how to get the ball close to some of the best pin placements we have seen which helped produce the high drama at the prize giving dinner in the Famous Grouse restaurant which everyone enjoyed immensely due to the fact that no fewer than six people had tied with the winning score of 40 pts and with the Hon. Secretary announcing that everyone was tied before 5th place had been announced left six players waiting nervously to get the result.

The runner up with 40 pts and a back nine score of 21 pts was Eugene Scullion. Third place went to Nigel Magowan also 40 pts and with a back nine score of 20 pts pushed our very popular club treasurer into fourth spot due to count back on the last six holes as Eddie also had a score of 40 pts and 20 pts on the back nine holes. Jackson Ruddock had to be content with 5th place due his back nine score of 19 pts in his 40 pts total.

The front nine prize was won by Ian Gordon with a score of 22 pts. Ian was the sixth player on the day to have recorded a score of 40 pts. Neville Cornett won the back nine prize with a score of 22 pts. Six handicapper and former captain’s day winner Jonny McNabb is a consistent prize winner at captain’s night and didn’t disappoint this year by taking the gross prize with a great round of 75 shots.

The longest drive contest is now turning into a no contest as big hitting Keith Johnston yet dominates this this event again for the third year in a row. How Alan Parr managed to get the ball to within six feet of the hole to win the nearest the pin prize nobody knows with that pin tucked in like it was. Ben McAlister won the Juvenile competition with good point’s total of 38 pts. The past captains prize was won by John Allen with a very good score of 39 pts of his eight handicap. Denis Lavery was a very popular winner in the seniors section scoring 38 pts. The ladies prize was won by Mellissa Shortall with 35 pts.

In Brendan’s visitors section Liam Tennyson won the longest drive and Paul Wasson had a great day’s golf winning both the visitors nearest the pin and the overall competition. In all hats off to our captain Brian Morgan as the day was a success from start to finish.

Next week’s event is the charity cup in aid of prostate and all members are asked to attend and support this very worthy cause. The format on the day will be a two ball scramble which is a great fun way to play a game of golf.

Ulster final day at Loughgall this Sunday 8th august 2pm tee off in the All Ireland Irish mail foursomes. Richard and Joel need your support so please come along and support your team so we can help create an atmosphere worthy of this one of occasion.

24/07/2010 - Rushmere Shopping Centre Sponsored Competition

Last weekend’s Rushmere Shopping Centre sponsored stroke play event attracted another good entry. The winner with an excellent score of 66 nett was big hitting Ross Kelly. Ross covered the front nine with a score of 34.50 nett and finished his winning round well with a score of 31.50 nett for his first win of the year. Second spot went to 6 handicapper Jason Wilson with a very respectable score of 68 nett. Jason edged out two other players out of second place due to his better back nine score of 32 nett. In third place was Rodney Clarke who had a nett score of 68 and the fourth spot was won by Adam Galbraith with a score of 69 nett of his 12 handicap.

The 0-12 section was won by Roy Holmes with a score of 70 nett. James O`Hagan took the 13-18 section off 18 with a score of 69 nett and the 19-28 section prize went to Derek Wallace with a score of 70 nett. The gross prize went to John Allen with a nett score 68. The front nine was won by Noel Holmes with a nett score of 34.50 and Rodney Kernaghan won the back nine prize with a score of 29 nett. The juvenile competition went to Jamie Wortley with a fine score of 68 nett.

Twelve players managed to get a “2” at the weekend with Rodney Clarke, Stephen Mills and John Currie getting theirs at 3rd hole. Derek Wallace, Gareth Strain, Roy Holmes and Graham Moore all scored their “2” at the short 11th hole. Clive Currie and Seamus Golding recorded theirs at the 13th hole and Mark Gilpin, Stephen Brown and Jarlath McKeever all got one at the 15th hole.

Next week’s event is the won everyone wants to take part in, which is Brendan Morgan’s Captains Day and already the tee times are almost filled. A few places are still remaining for late entrants who should contact Cecil Brownlee for a slot on 07802446664. The evening celebrations will be held in the Famous Grouse at 8.00 pm. Any members bringing a guest must purchase a ticket at the starters hut on Saturday.

17/07/2010 - Trustees Sponsored Stableford Competition

The Trustee`s sponsored stableford on Saturday attracted a good entry. The winner was Sam Jenkins with a score of 42 pts off his 20 handicap. After nine holes Sam had only scored 15 pts and was in 45th place and not in contention. In the back nine Sam played like Rory McElroy on the first day of the Open scoring 27 pts to win his first competition at loughgall. Second place went to Shane O`Neill who also scored 42 pts off his 9 handicap. Third place went to Kenny Kerr with an impressive score of 41 pts off his 7 handicap. Kenny scored 20 pts and 21 pts on his respective nines. Kevin Keegan took fourth spot scoring 39 pts of his 17 handicap.

The gross prize went to Jonathan McNabb who covered the course in 74 shots. The 0-12 section was won by Neal Breen with a score of 39 pts. Stephen Graham took the 13-18 section with 38 pts and Seamus Cunningham won the 19-28 section with a score of 36 pts. The front nine prize was won by Graham Buckley with 21 pts. Jonny Lockhart took the back nine prize with 23 pts. Young Philip McCoy will be glad to hear he will be playing of 13 next week after winning the juvenile competition with a great score of 43 pts.

There were 14 “2”s scored at the weekend. Paul Lyness got his at the 3rd hole. Philip Morrow recorded the only “2” at the 5th hole. Jonny McNabb, Sam Jenkins, Alan Mills, and Joel Kennedy all scored their “2”s at the short 11th hole. David Coote and Jason Wilson scored theirs at the 13th hole. Jonny McNabb, Alan Parr, Stephen O`Conner, Kevin Borlase, Brian Adair, and Pat Keegan all scored their “2”s at the 15th hole.

The last competition before Captains Day always attracts a large entry. This year the competition will be sponsored by the Rushmere Shopping Centre and will be a stroke play event.

The Rossmore team put on a brave performance against Lisburn winning the home leg 3-1 but unfortunately it wasn’t enough loosing the match 4.5-3.5. Loughgall’s points came from Eugene Scullion and Jonathan McKnight who were 4 under par when they beat their opponents 6 and 4. In the second game Richard Wright and Joel Kennedy fought back after losing the first two holes to finish birdie, birdie par to win 3 and 2. The third game was also played to a very high standard with the Lisburn pair going birdie, birdie in the first two holes leaving Loughgall’s Walter Beattie and Roy Holmes to grind out a well earned halved match at the 18 hole. In the last and deciding game Ross Kelly and Willy Young played out of their skin to lead by 2 holes but the Lisburn pair played some superb golf and deserved the half point they got to put their team into the semi-finals.

Loughgall`s juvenile golfers have recorded their second win in the Craigavon Shield league with a 15 pts to 12 pts win over local rivals Portadown. With two games to play, their next match against Armagh will have huge significance in their bid to qualify for the semi-finals. Best performance of the day was by Graeme (Daly) Currie who won all four points.

10/07/2010 - Bank of Ireland Sponsored Stroke Competition

The Bank of Ireland sponsored stroke competition was won at the weekend by Barry Rayner with an excellent 65 nett of his 15 handicap. Barry went out in 34.5 nett and returned home in 30.5. for a well earned victory. Second place went to John Allen with a score of 66 nett. John scored 33 nett on each nine. Third place went to Dennis Glass with 68 nett and Jonny McNabb came in fourth place a score of 69 nett. The gross prize was won by Kenny Kerr with a score of 75 off his 7 handicap. The 0-12 section was won by Keith Campbell with a score of 71 nett due to better back nine score of 32 nett. The 13-18 section was won by Philip Leckey with a fine score of 69 nett and William Turner took the 19-28 section with a score of 71 nett. William Stewart won the front nine prize with a score of 34.5 nett and Alan McCartney took the back nine with a score of 28 nett.

The juvenile winner was big hitting Gareth Strain who in junior talk (ripped the course apart) going round the course in 75 shots off his 17 handicap for a score of 58 nett and for his efforts will be playing of 13 next week.

Eight “2”s were scored at the weekend with James Hewitt getting three of them at the 11th, 13th and 15th holes. Karl Judt got his at the 3rd hole. Stephen O`Conner and Aaron Agg got theirs at the 5th hole. Neil Armstrong and Harry Clougher were the other players to get a “2”, with theirs coming at the 11th hole.

Next week’s competition is sponsored by the Trustees and will be a stableford event.

The Rossmore team suffered a heavy defeat away to Lisburn at the weekend going down 3.5 to 0.5. Loughgall`s only half came from Eugene Scullion and Jonathan McKnight.

03/07/2010 - Past Captains Cup Competition Results

There was a good entry for The Past Captains Cup despite the course being played short due to the vintage rally. One player shot the round of his life, 14 handicapper Albert Mulligan returned an astonishing 48 pts. Albert scored 25 pts going out and 23 pts on the back nine. Second place went to Desmond Hughes who would normally have won with a score of 46 pts of his 17 handicap. Third spot went to Charlie Johnson with 44 pts. Nigel McCorry took 4th place with 43 pts.

The 0-12 section was won by Mark McKeever with 42 pts. Joe Murphy got the 13-19 section with 43 pts and the 19-28 section prize went to Samuel Duffy also with 43 pts.

The front nine prize was won by Brian Teague with a great score of 25 pts. John Allen took the back nine with 23 pts.

The gross was won by 6 handicapper David Hamilton going round the course in 73 shots. The juvenile competition was won by Jamie Wortley with 44 pts.

Eleven “2”s were scored at the weekend with Mark McKeever getting his first “2” of the day at the 2nd hole. Harry Clougher, Rodney Kernaghan, Fionntan Nixon, Raymond Henry and Mark McKeever all scored theirs at the 11th hole. William Turner was the only player to get one at the 13th hole while Kenny Nesbitt, Brendan Morgan, Pat Keegan, Jonny McNabb and Derek Wallace all scored theirs at the 15th hole.

26/06/2010 - Saltmarine Stroke Play Competition Results

Last week’s sponsored competition was supported by Salt Marine and was a stroke play event which was won by Stephen Mullen with a nett 64 off his 9 handicap. Stephen scored 31.5 nett going out and finished the back nine well with a score of 32.5 nett. Second place went to John Allen who scored 65 nett off his 10 handicap. John scored 34 nett on the front nine and a great score of 31 nett on his way home. Kenny Nesbitt took third place also with a score of 65 nett. Kenny scored 32.5 nett on both his respective nines. Fourth spot was won by Neville Cornett with a 66 nett score.

The 0-12 section was won by Christopher Campbell with a score of 67 nett. Barry Rayner took the 13-18 section with a 66 nett score and the 19-28 section prize went to Stephen McCann with a 67 nett score. Eugene Scullion won the front nine prize with a 31.5 nett and the back nine prize went to Walter Beattie with an unbeatable 27.5 nett thanks to his hole in one at the 15th hole, (well done Walter).

The gross prize was won by Paul Lyness with a fine score of 1 over par off his 6 handicap. Adam Kerr won the juvenile prize with a score of 66 nett off his 12 handicap.

There was a total of eleven “2”s at the weekend with the first one coming at the shortened 4th hole by young Adam Kerr. David McCrory, Jeff Armstrong and Stephen Wilson scored their “2”s at the 11th hole. Ross Kelly and Jeff Armstrong both eagled the 14th hole and Willy Fenton, Rodney Kernaghan, Seamus Golding and Eugene Scullion all recorded their “2” at the 15th hole.

Next week’s competition is the Past Captains Cup and will be a stableford event.

Unfortunately the St Andrews playoff at Silverwood golf club failed to produce a single Loughgall qualifier for this year’s finals.

Richard Wright and Joel Kennedy are keeping the clubs hopes going on the team front with a dramatic last green victory over Belfast club Hollywood, as the Loughgall pair finished the last three holes with birdie, bogie, birdie to their opponent’s finish of par, par birdie to hold on for a one hole victory that sees Loughgall golf club go into their first ever Ulster Final where they will play Gracehill golf club for a place in the semi-finals of The Irish Mail All-Ireland Fourball Trophy which will both be played at the spectacular Macreddin course Co Wicklow, in September.

19/06/2010 - The Four Club novelty Event Results

The Four Club novelty event was played in glorious sunshine at the weekend and was won by 14 handicapper David McAdam. David scored 17 pts on the front nine and an incredible 23 pts with only four clubs in his bag on his way home for a total winning score of 40 pts. Runners up spot in the competition went to James O`Hagan also with 40 pts. Current Captain`s Day winner Jeff Armstrong had to settle for 3rd place in this event for the second year running with a fine score of 39 pts. Fourth prize was taken by Roy Holmes with 37 pts. The 0-12 section prize was won by Ross Kelly with 36 pts. Jackson Ruddock took the 13-18 section with a total score of 37 pts and Neville Cornett scored 35 pts to take 19-28 section. The front nine prize was won by Willy Fenton with 22 pts and Stephen McCann came away with the back nine scoring 20 pts of his 20 handicap. The gross prize was won by David McCrory and Graeme Currie won the Juvenile competition with 35 pts.

Due to the limited club selection on the day only six players managed a “2” at the weekend. Alan Mills and Stephen Wilson got theirs at the 5th hole. Stuart Pearson, Aaron Agg, John Allen and Graeme Currie all got theirs at the 13th hole.

Next week’s event is sponsored by Salt Marine and will be a stroke play competition.

The Holt shield team were in action on Sunday away to knock losing the match 4 to 1. Loughgall's only win came from the inform Jarlath McKeever who beat the Knock captain at the last hole. Credit must go to Jarlath as he was also making his debut in the Holt shield team.

Everyone at the club would like to wish Keith Johnston, Pat Keegan, David McCrory, Seamus Golding, Graham Buckley and William McWilliams all the very best of luck next Sunday morning 9.30 am at Silverwood Golf Club were the annual playoff between the two clubs will see five of the twelve players taking part heading to the finals of the U.K.P.G.C. championships at St Andrews on the 27th September. The other match of any significance this week is the Ulster semi-final match of the Irish Mail All-Ireland Fourball Trophy, were loughgall pair Richard Wright and Joel Kennedy will be trying to keep their cup run going as they take on a pair from Hollywood golf club at loughgall at 4.30 pm on Thursday. Support for these matches would be very much appreciated.

12/06/2010 - Edenderry Golf Society (Fourball Betterball) Competition

The four man team event run at loughgall at the weekend attracted a good field and the weather reflected in the scoring. Winners of the competition were the team of Nicolas Salley, Stephen O`Connor, Eamon Gorman and Keith Campbell who dove tailed brilliantly to combine a winning score of 92 pts. Second spot went to the young team of Ben McAlister, Gareth Strain, Daniel Huey and Philip McCoy with great score of 91 pts. Highlight of the young lads round was Gareth`s chip in at the shortened 9th hole for an eagle and 5 pts. Third place was made up by the team of Andrew Currie, Derick Hynes, Jarlath McKeever, and Jeff Armstrong with a total score of 90 pts.

Clive Curries Ulster Cup team had a very disappointing result on Saturday going down 4.5 to 2.5 at home against Ballymena after the hard work had been done the previous week when they tied the away leg 3.5 to 3.5. Winners for loughgall on the day were Keith Campbell and Stephen Crowe. Praise must go to Stephen who won all his matches in this year’s Ulster Cup home and away.

Next week’s event is the fun four Club Novelty competition and all members are reminded that you must only have four clubs in your bag prior to the start of your round; the selection of the four clubs is down to your best judgment!!!

05/06/2010 - St. Andrews Qualifier

The St.Andrew`s qualifier sponsored by Console Repair Centre was played on Saturday and attracted the biggest entry so far this year as six lucky players qualify to a playoff against Silverwood Golf Club for one of the five all expenses paid trips to the U.K.P.G.C. championships at the home of golf. The overall winner was Graham Buckley with a massive 47 pts of his 19 handicap. Graham will be happy to know he will be playing of 16 next week. In second place was David McCrory with 43 pts. The highlight of David’s round was when he pitched his second shot into the hole from 100 yards at the 16th for an eagle and 5 pts. Keith Johnston qualified by winning the gross prize going round the course in 74 shots.

The remaining three qualifying places went to the three players who finished highest in their respected sections. Pat keegan won the 0-12 section with 38 pts due to his better back nine. The 13-18 section went to Seamus Golding also with 38 pts and William McWilliams took the remaining slot in the 19-28 section with 39 pts. Adam Kerr won the juvenile prize on the day with a fantastic score of 43 pts and finds himself playing of a twelve handicap next week.

There were 14 “2”s on the day with David McCrory getting a pair at the 13th and 16th holes. Adrian Faulkner also got a pair at the 5th and 11th holes. Ross Kelly was the only player to get one at the 3rd hole Rodney Kernaghan, Derick Hynes, William Crozier, Paul Lyness and Shane O`Neill all got theirs at the short 11th hole. Philip Leckey, Malachy McHugh, and Adam Kerr all got their “2” at the 13th hole. Alan Parr was the only player to get a “2” at the 15th hole.

Next week’s event is sponsored by Edenderry Golf Society and will be a (fourball better ball) format with each player playing their own ball of a three quarter handicap, best two point’s scores to count at each hole.

Mixed fortunes for the two club teams competing at the weekend. Clive Curries Ulster Cup team got a great result in the first leg away to Ballymena golf club tying the match 3.5-3.5. winners on the day were Pat Keegan 2&1, Walter Beattie 4&2, Stephen Crowe 3&1, and man of the tie was Aaron Agg who came back from being 4 down to get a half point much to his captains delight. The other team in action at the weekend was Neil Walkers Holt Shield team Away to Shandon Park who went down by 4 games to 1. Loughgall, s only point came from Jason Wilson who beat his opponent 3&1. This week’s Sunday sweep was won by Brian Teague with 43 pts.

29/05/2010 - Nutt's Corner Oval Sponsored Competition

There was another excellent entry at the weekend for Loughgall's Nutt's Corner Oval sponsored competition and the terrific condition of the course meant there was some good scores returned. The winner was 8 handicapper David Chadwick with a score of 65 nett. David covered the course in 73 strokes, only 1 over par to win his first competition of the season. Second place went to Paul Lyness who scored 66 nett off his 7 handicap. Paul went out in 34.50 nett and came home in 31.50 nett. Third place was won by Ian Magill also with a score of 66 nett. Ian played the front nine in 33.50 nett and scored 32.50 nett on the back nine holes. Fourth spot went to William Young with a score of 68 nett of his 16 handicap. Willy scored 37 nett going out and 31 nett on the way back.

The 0-12 section was won by Ulster Cup captain Clive Currie with a score of 71 nett. Cecil Brownlee took the 13-18 prize with a 68 nett score and the 19-28 section went to Wayne Hamilton with a nett 70. Stephen Brown won the front nine with a 32 nett score and Seamus Golding took the back nine with a 28.50 nett score.

The gross prize was won by Ciaran Kelly going round the course in 73 shots. Adam Kerr was this week’s juvenile champion with a score of 68 nett of his 15 handicap.

Nine “2” players scored a “2” at the weekend with Raymond Henry and William Young getting theirs at the third hole. Stephen Leckey, Jeff Armstrong, and Kenny Todd at the 11th hole. David McCrory was the only player to get one at the 13th hole. David Chadwick got an eagle at the fourteenth hole for his “2” and Barry Rayner and Richard Wright got theirs at the 15th hole.

Next week’s event is the St Andrews Qualifier sponsored this year by Console Repair Centre.

In The Irish Mail All Ireland Fourball Trophy the Loughgall team of Richard Wright and Joel Kennedy are now only one of the four Ulster teams remaining in the competition after beating Ardglass 4 and 2 away.

The Sunday sweep 30/5/2010 was won by Graham Buckley with 44 pts. Runner-up with 39 pts was William McWilliams. Stephen Crowe took the third spot with 37 pts.

22/05/2010 - Club Stableford Competition

The club stableford competition was played in good weather at the weekend and was won by Alan Magill with 42 pts off his 14 handicap. Second spot went to Rodney Clark who scored 41 pts of his 16 handicap. Rodney scored 18 pts on the front nine and 23 pts on the back nine. Joe Murphy took third place also with 41 pts. Joe scored 20 pts going out and 21 pts on his way home. Forth spot went to William McWilliams with 41 pts. William managed to get 21 pts on the front nine and 20 on the back nine holes playing of his 20 handicap.

The gross prize was won by Stephen Mullen with 76 shots. Ross Kelly won the 0-12 section, Eugene Scullion took the 13-18 section and Brian Adair won the 19-28 section prize. Jackson Ruddock won the front nine with 24 pts and Brian Williamson took the back nine with 22 pts. The juvenile prize went to Jamie Wortley with 37 pts.

Well done to Stephen Mullen, Alan Magill, and William McWilliams who qualified for the Irish pro-am qualifying competition at Donegal Golf Club (Murvagh).

Next week’s event will be sponsored by Nutts Corner Oval and will be a stroke play competition.

The Sunday Sweep was won Philip McCoy with 38 pts. Barry Rayner took second spot with 35 pts and Brian Teague got third with 34 pts.

Congratulations to John Allen’s Juvenile team in their fine win against Ardglass. They lost the away game 11.5 to 8.5 and won the home game with a great performance taking 19.5 pts out of a possible 20. Winners on the day were Ben McAlister 4-0, Daniel Huey 4-0, Gareth Strain 4-0, Adam Kerr 4-0, and Fenton Nixson 3.5-0.5.

The Rossmore travelled to Rockmount on Sunday for the return leg just needing a halved match to progress into the quarter-finals and came up against a much improved Rockmount team. The Loughgall team narrowly lost the first three games to leave the tie wide open. Richard Wright and Joel Kennedy fought back in the anchor game from being 3 down after seven holes to secure the tie for loughgall on the 17th hole playing the last 11 holes in 1 under par.

15/05/2010 - Granville Food Care Sponsored Competition

The Granville Food Care sponsored competition attracted an excellent entry at the weekend. The winner with a super 65 nett was David McAdam playing off his 17 handicap. In second place was Rodney Kernaghan with a fine 67 nett also off his 17 handicap. Third spot went to our club captain Brendan Morgan covering the course in 84 shots for a 68 nett score off his 17 handicap. Fourth position was won by Kevin Borlase with a 69 nett score.

The 0-12 section went John Currie with a nett 74. Ian Magill took the 13-18 section scoring 71 nett and Richard Abbott won the 19-28 section prize with 71 nett. The front nine prize went to Nigel McCorry. The back nine prize was won by Mark Montgomery.

Club player of the year Kenny Kerr took the gross prize and young Ben McAlister won the juvenile competition.

Nine “2”s where recorded at the weekend with Mark Montgomery, Joel Kennedy and David McAdam getting theirs at the short 11th hole. Walter Beattie and Brendan Morgan at the 13th hole. Alan Magill, Adam Galbraith, Ben McAlister, and competition winner David McAdam for his second “2” of the day at the 15th hole.

Due to the car rally talking place at loughgall Next week the 12th hole will be closed all day and some other holes may be playing shorter than normal. The event for the day will be a non qualifying club stableford competition.

Several teams were in action over the weekend with Clive Curries Ulster Cup team playing their match against Helens Bay on Friday and Sunday. The home leg was played on Friday with the Loughgall team winning 4-3. The winning players were Stephen Crowe who crushed his opponent by 8 and 7. Aaron Agg won 2 up, Noel Holmes won 4 and 2, and Kenny Todd won his game 2 and 1.

In the away leg things did not look good for the loughgall team as they lost the first three games and with the score at 6-4 to Helens Bay some might have thought the game was over but not the boys from loughgall who battled back with wins from Keith Campbell 3 and 2, Aaron Agg 2 and 1, and man of the tie Stephen Crowe winning by 4 and 2. Loughgall took the tie on a holes count back with the score all even at 7-7.

Neil Walkers Holt Shield team were held to a 2.5-2.5 draw at home to very strong Shandon Park team on Sunday. Loughgall, s points came from Jason Wilson halved match, Andrew Currie won 2-0 and Mr. Consistency Paul Lyness won his match 3-2.

The Rossmore team looks very strong this year and made no mistakes in their home match against Rockmount winning 4-0. Jonathan Lockhart and Willy Young won the opening game 3 up, Ross Kelly and Jeff Armstrong won 3 and 1, Jonathan McKnight and Eugene Scullion won 2 and 1, Richard Wright and Joel Kennedy took the lead on the 18th hole to win by one hole.

08/05/2010 - Apple Blossom Open Competition

The Apple Blossom Open was played last Saturday in great weather and Loughgall Golf Course was in great condition with the pins in some tight places.

That did not stop some good scores coming in, results are as follows:

1st place Brian Nixon 42pts, 2nd Kevin Keegan 41pts, 3rd Richard Wright 40pts, 4th Kyle Johnston 39pts, 5th John Allen 37pts.

Gross prize winner was Jason Wilson with a fine 76 score. Juvenille winners were 1st Daniel Huey and 2nd Adam Kerr.

Ladies 1st place was Lynn Coote, 2nd Janet Forbes.

2's on the day were Neil Armstrong, Patrick Keegan, Shane O'Neil, Kenny Nesbit all at the 3rd hole. Richard Wright, Malachy McHugh, Mark McKeever got theirs at the 11th hole.

Next weeks event is sponsered by Granville Food Care and is a stroke event.

01/05/2010 - Keegan's Bar Sponsored Stroke Play Competition

Last weekend’s Keegan's bar sponsored stroke play event attracted another good field. The winner was Kevin Borlase with a score of 65 nett playing off his 24 handicap. Kevin scored 35 nett on the front nine holes and 30 nett on the back nine. The runner up spot was won by Aaron Caddell with a score of 66 nett. Richard Abbott came 3rd due to his better back nine score off 32 nett after scoring 35 nett on his way out for a total score of 67 nett. Stephen Crowe got 4th place also with a score of 67 nett.

Jonathan Hewitt won the 0-12 section prize with a score of 68 nett off his 8 handicap. The 13-18 section was won by Graham Moore with a score of 68 nett and Neville Cornett took the 19-28 section also with a 68 nett score. The juvenile prize went to young Fionntan Nixon with a score of 68 nett playing off his 28 handicap. Richard Wright won the front nine prize with a 35.50 nett score and Stephen McCann got the back nine with a nett score of 29.50.

Jarlath McKeever who recently rejoined the club is putting some great performances lately and was a double winner at the weekend taking the gross prize on Saturday with 76 shots playing off 8. Then the following day playing off 7 won the Sunday sweep with a fine score of 40 pts. (Are you watching team captains?)

Only seven players managed a “2” at the weekend with Gareth Strain recording one at the 3rd hole. Jarlath McKeever got his at the difficult 218 yards 5th hole. Derick Hynes, Jonathan Hewitt, and Stephen Mullen at the 11th hole. Drew Magee and Kenny Kerr got theirs at the 15th hole.

Loughgall pair Richard Wright and Joel Kennedy are through to the third round of the Daily mail foursomes after defeating Dungannon at Dungannon in the third extra playoff hole.

Next week’s competition Saturday 8th may is the Apple Blossom Open. 24/04/2010 - International Pairs Qualifier Competition

The International Pairs Qualifier attracted a good entry on Saturday. The winners with a great score of 45 pts were William McWilliams and Eugene Scullion, playing off three quarters of their handicaps they managed to score 22 pts on their outward nine and 23 pts on their homeward nine holes.

Two pairings scored 43 pts with Jonathan McNabb and Stephen Crowe taking second place due to their better back nine. They scored 19 pts going out and 24 pts coming home. Third spot went to the pair of Jonathan Lockhart and Steve Graham also with 43 pts. Jarlath McKeever and Niall Morgan were fourth with 42 pts.

Kevin Keegan`s Ulster Fourball team defeated Green Acres 4-1 at home on Sunday. Loughgall's winners were Graham Buckley and Kevin McCoy who won by 5 & 3. Mal Cullen and Graham Moore won 7 & 6. Steve Wall and Eamon Gorman were the other victors, winning by 5 & 3. Seamus Golding, Steve McCann, Dessie Hughes and Willy Fenton all halved their games.

Last weekend’s Linkni.com Northern Ireland Web Design sponsored stroke play event attracted another good field. The winner was Desmond Hughes with a score of 66 nett. Dessie pushed four other players out of the top spot who also recorded the same score due to his better back nine of 28.50 nett. Second place went to Pat Keegan With 66 nett. Pat scored 36 nett on the front nine and 30 nett on the back nine. Richard Wright finished in third place and must be regretting falling victim to the new out of bounds markers at the 18 hole resulting in dropping two shots for his 66 nett score. Fourth spot went to Barry Rayner with 31.50 nett on the front nine and 34.50 nett on his way home.

The 0-12 section went to Drew Magee with a score of 70 nett. Eugene Scullion took the 13-19 section with a score of 68 nett and Graham Buckley won the 19-28 section prize with 67 nett. The front nine prize went to Walter Beattie with a score of 36.50 nett and Willy Young won the back nine with a score of 28 nett. Well done to Alan Parr on winning the gross prize after his recent back injury. The juvenile winner was Daniel Huey with a score of 67 nett.

Ten players scored a “2” at the weekend. Stephen Graham, Eugene Scullion, John Allen, Jamie Wortley, and Dessie Hughes all got theirs at the 11th hole. Aaron Agg was the only player to get a “2” at the 13 hole. Tom Acheson, Mal Cullen, and Pat Keegan at the 15th hole. William Crozier recorded his “2” at the par 4 14th hole.

Two club teams were in action last week with Eddie Millers Junior Cowdy team who will have an uphill task in their home match next week after losing 4-0 away to a strong Dungannon team. Neil Walkers Holt Shield team narrowly lost 3-2 at home against Knock. Loughgall,s wins came from Stephen Mullen 4 and 3. Congratulations to Paul Lyness who hit a hole in one at the 11th hole in his 3-2 win.

11/04/2010 - Coote Concrete Products Ltd Sponsored Stableford Competition

The Coote Concrete Products Ltd sponsored stableford event was played in fine weather at the weekend. With the course playing very close to its full length and in excellent condition, the winner on the day with a score of 41 pts was Graham Buckley, Graham scored a magnificent 22 pts going out and 19 pts coming home for his first win of the year. Second place went to Kevin McCoy with 40 pts off his 18 handicap. Third spot was won by Aaron Agg also with 40 pts off his 13 handicap but lost out on the count back. Fourth place went to Eugene Scullion scoring 38 pts.

The gross prize was won by Paul Lyness. The 0-12 section winner was Mark Montgomery with 38 pts, Alan Magill took the 13-18 section with 37 pts and Neil Armstrong won the 19-28 section with 35 pts. The front nine prize was won by Joel Kennedy with 20 pts and Kenny Todd took the back nine prize with an impressive 23 pts. The juvenile winner was Adam Kerr with 38 pts off his 15 handicap

With the course being quite wet in places this did not affect some good scores coming in on the day with the winner Keith Campbell coming in with a net 65 for 1st place, 2nd place went to Stephen Crowe net 66, 3rd place was Alan Magill net 67, 4th place James O'Hagan net 67. Section winners are 0-12 John Allen, 13-18 Jonathan Cousins, 19-28 Stephen McCann, Juvenille winner Daniel Huey net 68, Gross Neil Walker net 70, Front nine winner was Noel Holmes net 34.50, back nine David Chadwick net 30.00, players who scored 2's are Johnathan Mcnabb, Alan Magill, John Allen, Jamie Wortley, Patrick Mcelmeel all at the 13th hole, and Joel Kennedy, Adam Galbraith at the 11th hole. Next weeks event will be the Coote Concrete Products Ltd which will be stableford.

27/03/2010 - The Famous Grouse Sponsored Stableford Competition

Last weekends The Famous Grouse sponsored stableford competition attracted a good entry and with the front nine holes playing over 400 yards short of its full length the scoring was guaranteed to be high. The winner with a superb score of 45 pts was David McAdam. David playing off his 16 handicap had one of those days when everything goes right playing on a shortened course were most holes could be hit in regulation. David scored 22 pts on the tamed front nine holes and with his confidence on a high went on to record 23 pts on his way home.

David Chadwick took second place with 42 pts going round the easy front nine in level par and finished his round in 2 over par off his 8 handicap. Third spot went to Robert Treanor also with 42 pts. Robert also made easy work of the front nine holes scoring 23 pts and a respectable 19 pts on the back nine.

Five players scored 41 pts but nobody could deny Tom Acheson 4th place. Tom recorded his first ever hole in one at the 11th hole and was seen by many running over to the hole dropping to his knees and kissing the ball. (Well done Tom).

The gross prize was won by the ever consistent Paul Lyness. Jonathan McKnight won the 0-12 section with 41 pts. The 13-18 section prize went to Brian Teague with a score of 39 pts and Graham Buckley scored 41 pts to win the 19-28 section. The front nine went to Noel Holmes with 22 pts and Philip Leckey scored 23 pts to take the back nine prize. The juvenile prize was won by Daniel Huey with 42 pts of his 12 handicap.

Nine players managed a “2” at the weekend with Harry Clougher getting his at the shortened 3rd hole. Stephen Mullan, Richard Wright, Neal Breen, and Jonathan McKnight at the 11th hole, Derick Hynes at the 13th, Eugene Scullion managed an eagle at the par 4 14th hole for his “2”. Alan Magill and Clive Currie birdied the 15th hole and not forgetting Big Tom`s hole in one at the 11th hole.

Next week’s event is the PGA Tankard Qualifier and will be stroke play event with a prize in the finals at Balmoral golf club with meals included.

20/03/2010 - Captains Drive Report

There was an excellent entry and fantastic weather as Loughgall Golf Club played host on Saturday to the Captain`s Drive, a tournament where, traditionally, the new Club Captain is ceremoniously welcomed to his new role. This year we saw Brendan Morgan hit one of the best first tee shots seen by a new captain in recent years with his ball going straight down the middle much to the relief of Brendan. This was a great fun event with each team picking the best drive playing their second shots from that position.

The winners of the competition were the quartet of Stephen McCann, Kenny Kerr, Stephen Crowe and John Currie with 104 pts. In second spot due to their better back nine were Harry Clougher, David Coote and Jonathan Cousins with 100 pts.

The Sunday Sweep was well supported at the weekend due to the great playing conditions and was won by one very shy club secretary with 42 pts off his 13 handicap. Runner up was Dessie Hughes with 38 pts. Paul Lyness took third spot scoring 37 pts. Paul only managed to score 14 pts going out but played the back nine in one under par for a fantastic 23 pts to edge out Neal Breen into fourth place also with 37 pts.

Next Saturday see`s the start of the qualifying competitions that will be going towards player of the year. All points for player of the year will be based on top twenty finishes in all qualifying competitions over the year with 1st place getting 20 pts down to 20th place getting 1 point. Any winner of a matchplay cup will also receive 10 pts going towards player of the year. Next week’s competition is sponsored by The Famous Grouse restaurant and will be a stableford event.
